1/1/2024 0 Comments Crimson norway maple treeMost varieties of Norway maple attain a height of 50 to 60 feet. The Norway maple is a native of Europe and the western parts of Asia. The Parent, The Norway Maple – The Crimson King maple is not a separate species but is a cultivar or variety of the species Acer plantanoides, the Norway maple. They are usually not found where summer temperatures are very hot, or the overall climate is dry or arid. Maples by and large grow in more temperate or cooler climates. However, there are a few species native to North America and Europe. Many, probably most, species of maple trees originated in Asia. Ornamental maple trees such as the Japanese maples, maples suitable for bonsai, sugar maples, and vine maple, whose brilliant fall foliage are often seen along the nation’s highways. There are large maple trees, some reaching a height of 100 feet or more. The maple tree, botanical name – Acer, is one of our favorite deciduous trees, whether growing in the wild or in a beautifully landscaped yard or garden. It can be effective, but the entire tree must be coated in order for this method to be effective.Even the name, Crimson King maple suggests a tree that is in some ways a bit out of the ordinary. Neem Oil is an organic method of treating some fungal diseases and pests. Generally, treating after infection isn't extremely effective, so if you have problems yearly treat in early spring with fungicides to prevent infection. For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin. You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap. Scale and Aphids are insects that can affect Maples. Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success. The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants. Maples are salt intolerant so keep them away from road sides in cooler climates and beach areas as well as any area known for soils with high salinity. Maple trees don't generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape. When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost. Maples can tolerate a wet area, but they shouldn't be in standing water. Maples should be watered often enough to keep the soil moist. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease. Mulching will also aid in keeping the roots cool and moist. Mulching with pine straw or pine bark will help over time as they begin to break down, but are not an immediate solution for increasing acidity. To acidify your soil, amend with compost, elemental sulfur, or use fertilizers specific for acid loving plants. If you have alkaline soil, you can amend your soil. However, Maples will adapt to a variety of soils. These trees tolerate full to part sun and prefer soil that is well-drained, slightly acidic, and nutrient rich. However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your Maple almost any time of the year. Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. When planting your Crimson King Maple tree be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive. In 2019, the American Library Association listed it as No. Since the 1960s, the book has faced challenges from inclusion in classrooms and libraries because of its language and subject matter. But many readers have also lionized Scout’s father, attorney Atticus Finch, who represents Tom Robinson, the innocent man on trial, despite the blowback and legal injustice that Finch expects to come. The events take place in the 1930s in a fictional Alabama town that was based on where the author grew up. The novel’s narrator, Scout, tells the story of a trial of a Black man falsely accused of rape and assault of a white woman - events that unveil the community’s racism, sexism and classism to Scout’s 6-year-old self. PBS viewers selected it as their top novel in the 2018 special The Great American Read. Oprah Winfrey has called it her favorite novel. Perhaps it reinforces your growing suspicion that you are unlikely to get a fair trial should you stand accused of something like Tom Robinson.” “But imagine instead that you are an African-American eighth-grade boy in Mississippi today, and are asked to read Mockingbird. “Many who defend Mockingbird as a choice for curriculum are imagining students emboldened by Atticus to ‘fight for right’ or inspired by Scout to be better than the society into which she is born,” wrote author Alice Randall in 2017 for NBC News. Their calls also echo writers in recent decades who have taken issue with what many fans believe is the moral of Mockingbird’s story, with the emphasis on identifying with Atticus and Scout as examples of how to be a good person living in a racist society. School districts in Bellevue and throughout the country have also reconsidered Mockingbird as part of middle and high school curricula. The book was made required reading in 2016 as part of a curriculum adoption, and has been approved in the district since 1992. The teachers’ request was the first time in 20 years that someone has proposed removing a text from the Mukilteo curriculum, Chandler said. They said the district should consider additional training for teachers to navigate sensitive texts. “It’s hurtful and it’s harmful.”Ĭhandler said several teachers did come to the book’s defense in front of the instructional materials committee, saying the themes in To Kill a Mockingbird still have relevance today and and the book can help students develop critical thinking. “They have to sit in that classroom and read derogatory terms,” Nguyen said. Thien Nguyen, a Mariner High School senior who represents students on the school board, said the district should also consult students on the matter. Instead, students should be taught in environments that respect them, he said. “It’s not about banning or censoring books,” Doug Baer, another Kamiak teacher, told the school board at the same meeting, adding that the novel will still be available in libraries throughout the district.īaer said kids should not have to “endure embarrassing and offensive language” during class discussions of the book. The criteria include grade appropriateness, how the material fits other textbooks and whether the textbook is free of ethnic, racial, gender or religious bias. That committee, made up of teachers and community members, approves all curricula in Mukilteo schools, assessing every textbook, including language arts, math, science and social studies. The district’s instructional materials committee agreed with the teachers about removing To Kill a Mockingbird from the ninth grade required reading list, but voted to allow teachers to continue to use it in their lesson plans. “We need to examine carefully … whose collective memory we are upholding,” she said. The teachers also cited concerns that characters in the book frequently use the N-word while no character explains that the slur is derogatory, and that the word and the portrayal of Black characters cause harm to students of color.Īt a school board meeting earlier this month, Verena Kuzmany, a teacher at Kamiak, questioned the “romanticization” of the book as a “cherished classic.” The teachers’ objections to the book included criticism that Black characters are not fully realized and that the book romanticizes the idea of a “white savior.” The book will not be not banned, however, and teachers may still choose to assign the book in their classrooms. Three teachers at Kamiak High School made the request in the fall to remove Lee’s iconic novel from the required ninth grade curriculum, said Monica Chandler, the district’s director of curriculum and professional development, told Crosscut in an interview before the school board approved the proposal. 1/1/2024 0 Comments Expo marker removerTake care not to damage or scratch the surface.įor stubborn stains, you can also try using a specialized non-porous surface cleaner. Honestly, I am surprised Marukai Cupertino would pick up these products, considering the P L E T H O R A of boba/milk tea establishments in the area, or even within a 2 mile radius. Though I don’t drink these often, I think there are better Matcha lattes or milk teas out there on the market.Ī hint of tea and a hint of milk? More like milk tease… □ Would I buy this again: Hmmm… on the fence, but leaning towards a no. The texture of the drink is what I can only describe as “slippery,” which isn’t totally enjoyable for me. (Also, no idea what the other stuff is for, but I’m no food scientist.)īoth of these drinks overall are a little sugary for me. Ingredients: Purified Water, Cane Sugar, Whole Milk Powder, Green Tea, Matcha, Skim Milk Powder, Natural Flavors, Salt, Gellan Gum, Sunflower Lecithin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C). After tasting it and checking out the ingredient list, it confirmed for me that Matcha powder wasn’t the main tea flavor of this drink. Ito En Unsweetened matcha is perfect for hot or cold brewing drink hot as a substitute for your morning coffee. theanine helps relieve the jittery effect that caffeine can produce Easy to prepare, cold or hot. I wish they just advertised it as green milk tea. Ito En Matcha Green Tea, Japanese Matcha Powder, Unsweetened, 12 Oz. The taste was alright, but the Matcha flavor was definitely weak and hard to find. Though that one also suffers from the same textural issue, it has a much more defined tea taste, if I remember correctly. I can’t help but compare this to ITO EN’s other milk tea, the aforementioned canned milk tea. The sugar somewhat overpowers it, so you’re really just left with a caramel-like sugary milk drink. The tea flavor in this drink is a little bit hard to taste. While understandable, this severely compromises the taste and texture. I think one of the main issues of canned or bottled drinks that have a milk base in “fresh” settings (ie: cafes, restaurants, etc.) is that they can’t use real milk or cream due to product longevity. These bottles are SOOOOO CUTE! Definitely one of the reasons why I picked them up. Though that one doesn’t quite compare to real milk tea made with milk or cream, I think it’s a solid choice if you find yourself in a boba desert… The canned milk tea seems to be the only survivor of that line, from what I see in stores. I had previously tried their canned teas from a “Hawaii-exclusive” (it wasn’t) line, which included ginseng green tea, black tea, and a milk tea. So, when I saw that Marukai was having a sale on the new milk teas from ITO EN, I just had to try it. My favorite of them is the one seen everywhere: the Unsweetened Oi Ocha. They’re also a great gateway to trying Asian teas such as hojicha, jasmine green tea, and barley tea. I love ITO EN! Their plain bottled teas are simple and delicious, when plain water is just too boring. According to the January 2019 Coffee and Tea Newsletter, “Earlier this month at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco, ITO EN North America launched two new ready-to-drink teas, Matcha Milk Tea and Black Milk Tea.” |
